For the general public, the traditional understanding of steel mill pollution comes first from the emitting gas. At the serious pollution of steel mill time, the emissions were yellow smoke, black smoke, red smoke, brown smoke, etc.

Yellow smoke is mainly produced by the smelting process, this smoke gas contains Sulfur solid, sulfuric acid mist, sulfur gas, etc., which also be attached with iron oxide, heavy metal ions and other pollutions.

Black smoke is mainly produced by coking, sintering, iron making process, and its main composition is the not fully burned formed black carbon particles. This smoke is often accompanied by choking taste and causing air pollution.

Red smoke is mainly produced by indigenous smelting of steel.

Brown smoke is generated when the iron ore pour into blast furnace. The smoke is mainly contains iron core, coke dust, CO, CO₂, and other harmful substances.

By contrast, white smoke is the water vapor mainly produced by coking, sintering, power generation process. As steel mills have increased the environmental control efforts, most of the mill emissions chimneys can basically do not emit polluted smoke. The white smoke we see, in fact, is the water vapor we usually say. White smoke generation is mainly related to the exhaust gas temperature.

In summer, water vapor from the chimney is invisible because of the high air temperature. In winter, because the air temperature is low, the chimney smoke is white smoke. In fact, this water vapor is not a contaminant. The water vapor will be gradually cooling by chimney lifts.

In the process, the water vapor will absorb off some dust, acid mist in the air, to a certain extent, can be air purifier. Generally speaking, the white smoke has no pollution to us.
